Embolisation is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure performed by interventional radiologists and it involves selectively occluding (blocking) blood vessels by purposely introducing blocking agents (sand-like particles, medical grade "glue" or tiny special coils) into the blood vessel(s) selected for occlusion. The whole process is performed through a tiny plast tube (catheter) placed directly into the blood vessel, using x-ray guidance to ensure the catheter is in the right position and to ensure the vessel is successfully closed off.
